P3: ILADI - The Ceremony

Thokozani bana ba koko.

I welcome you to our last post on the topic of iladi for the ancestors.

Iladi is a ceremony that is done for ancestors either to remember them, ask from them, seek guidance and at time apologize to them. Iladi can also be for a specific ancestor and can also be done ko ga Malome or ga bo papa gago.

This ceremony can be performed on a number of place depending on the intention of this ceremony. It can be performed at the river, the sea, mountains or at home.

This ceremony does not necessarily require a traditional healer to be present unless if it is done for thwaso or the fetching of an ancestor but in general this type of ceremony is performed by the family.

Iladi can be done with a goat or chicken.

The things that I normally use for iladi are:
• 12 candles (various colors)
• 1 white cloth
• Various fresh fruits
• Soft Drinks
• Alcohol (Beer, brown and white spirits)
• Weed
• Ntsu
• Boxer (BB)
• Traditional beer
• Tea (black no sugar)
• Snacks
• Amahewu (unflavored)

Before placing all these items on your white cloth you have to burn impepho for the chicken/ goat and talk to your ancestors telling them that we are doing this and we ask for that, depending on why you are doing the ceremony. Then place the cooked chicken/ goat at the alter where you will be doing iladi. Then place all the candles around the items mentioned above and then pray and sing be it church songs or sangoma songs.
